Zambia is facing a serious malaria outbreak, and the rural hospital in Senanga district is one of the hardest hit. The hospital, which serves a population of more than 100,000 people, is struggling to cope with the increase in malaria cases.
An overwhelmed health system
The hospital health system is overwhelmed, with a significant shortage of medical staff, equipment and supplies. The hospital’s medical director, Dr Mwaba, expressed concern over the hospital’s capacity to cope with the increasing number of malaria cases. “We are doing the best we can with the resources we have, but we are struggling to keep up with demand,” he said.
Increase in malaria cases
The malaria outbreak in Senanga district has seen a significant increase in the number of cases, with more than 500 patients admitted to hospital in the last month alone. The hospital emergency department is often overcrowded, with patients waiting hours to receive treatment.
Lack of bed capacity
The hospital has a total of 50 beds, but the recent increase in malaria cases has kept the hospital operating at full capacity. This led to patients being turned away or forced to wait on makeshift beds in hospital corridors.
Inadequate medical supplies
The hospital is also grappling with a shortage of medical supplies, including anti-malaria drugs and blood transfusion equipment. This has led to delays in treatment and concerns about the quality of care provided to patients.
Call for help
The hospital is seeking support from the government and international organizations to help ease the pressure. Dr Mwaba appealed for help, saying: “We need urgent support to help us fight this epidemic. We need more medical staff, equipment and supplies to provide quality care to our patients.
In the meantime, the hospital is working to educate the community on the importance of preventive measures against malaria. Public health campaigns are conducted to promote the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, insecticide spraying, and prompt seeking of medical care if symptoms appear.
The malaria outbreak at Senanga District Hospital is a stark reminder of the challenges facing health systems in rural Africa. The hospital’s struggles highlight the need for increased support and resources to help combat the outbreak and prevent similar crises in the future.
