Bombardment Continues as Medical Facilities Struggle to Keep Pace with Increasing Caseload
Juba, South Sudan – The Juba Teaching Hospital, the main referral hospital in the country, is struggling to cope with the staggering number of casualties pouring in from the ongoing civil war in South Sudan. The hospital, which is equipped to handle emergency cases and perform complex surgeries, has been overwhelmed with patients injured in the recent bombardment of the city.
The conflict, which began in December 2013, has led to the displacement of over 2.5 million people and left thousands in dire need of medical attention. The hospital, which is the only major medical facility in the region, is struggling to keep up with the demand.
“The hospital is at full capacity, with many patients forced to lie on the floor or share beds,” said Dr. James Reik, the hospital’s director. “It’s a challenging situation, but we’re doing our best to care for all the patients who come in.”
Shortage of Medical Supplies
The hospital is facing a severe shortage of medical supplies, including bandages, antibiotics, and painkillers. This has forced doctors to get creative in their treatment of patients, often using makeshift equipment and resourcefulness to save lives.
“We’re doing our best with the resources we have, but it’s a challenge,” said Dr. Reik. “We’re in dire need of medical supplies to service the large number of patients coming in. Without them, it’s difficult to provide the necessary care.”
International Community Urged to Intervene
Humanitarian organizations and international aid agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the violence, citing the devastating impact it’s having on civilians.
“The situation in South Sudan is dire and deteriorating rapidly,” said Oxfam’s Country Director in South Sudan, Mirembe Nantaba. “We urge the international community to take immediate action to stop the violence and provide support to those affected. The people of South Sudan deserve a chance to live in peace and dignity.”
The Future Remains Uncertain
As the conflict continues, the future of the people of South Sudan remains uncertain. The hospital, once the last hope for desperate patients, is struggling to keep up with the demand. The international community must act swiftly to bring an end to the violence and provide the necessary support to the people of South Sudan.
For now, the people of Juba and the hospital staff continue to do the best they can, despite the overwhelming circumstances. As Dr. Reik said, “We’re doing our best with what we have, but it’s a challenging situation. We just hope and pray that the violence ends soon.”
