The Brazzaville General Hospital, the largest hospital in the Republic of Congo, is facing a catastrophic crisis. The hospital, which is the city’s main healthcare provider, is overwhelmed with patients, causing medical staff to struggle to keep up with the demand for care.

Patients are piling up and medical supplies are running out

Hospital officials say the influx of patients has led to a severe shortage of medical supplies, including bandages, gloves and masks. The hospital is already operating at capacity, with patients spilling into hallways and makeshift clinics set up in waiting rooms.

“The situation is dire,” said Dr. Marie-Josephe M’Boua, the hospital’s medical director. “We are doing our best to treat as many patients as possible, but it is clear that we are at risk of running out of resources. We desperately need help.”

Families struggle to pay for care

The crisis has been exacerbated by the lack of financial resources available to care for patients. Many families struggle to afford basic medical care, leading to an increase in charity cases and a significant decrease in the hospital budget.

“It’s heartbreaking to see families struggling to make ends meet and watch their loved ones succumb to illness or injury because we cannot provide them with the care they need,” said Dr. M’Boua . “We are doing everything in our power to find creative solutions, but it is clear that we need urgent support from the international community.”

Concerns about disease transmission and infections

Overcrowding and lack of medical supplies also raise concerns about disease transmission and risk of infection.

“As the hospital becomes congested, the risk of disease transmission increases significantly,” said Dr. Jacques-Marie Kibola, a local epidemiologist. “We are already seeing cases of respiratory illnesses, diarrhea and skin infections, and it is clear that the situation will only get worse if we fail to get the hospital under control.”

Urgently needed solutions and support

The situation at the Brazzaville General Hospital is critical and requires immediate attention. Humanitarian organizations, governments and individuals are asked to provide support and supplies to help the hospital meet the growing demand for care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed for emergency funding to help the hospital purchase medical supplies and hire additional staff.

“We are doing everything in our power to support the hospital, but we urgently need the international community to step up and provide the necessary assistance,” Dr M’Boua said. “We can’t save lives without the resources we need to provide quality care. We’re counting on your help to get us back on our feet.”
