Geita Hospital is situated in the District of Geita, approximately 120 kilometers inland from the lakeside town of Mwanza. Throughout its 52-year history, the hospital has undergone several developments, expansions, and renovations to meet the rising demands of medical care in the region.
Infrastructure and Facilities
Geita Hospital boasts a mix of modern facilities and traditional African architecture, resulting in a culturally rich and resourceful healthcare establishment. The hospital has a main building, 10 wards with a total bed capacity of 150, intensive care unit, operating theater, and maternity wards. Additionally, there are departmental buildings hosting various specialties including pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, labor and delivery units, and pathology.

Geita Hospital offers a vast range of health services, both curative and preventive. Major departments include Obstetrics and Gynecology (antenatal and postnatal services, deliveries), Pediatrics (sick and special care), Maternal and Newborn Health Program, Family Medicine, and Surgery (operative and nonoperative). Other health services include ENT, Eye Clinics, Infectious Diseases Management, and Counseling and Testing Program for HIV/Aids.

Despite being a semi-rural community, Geita Hospital plays an essential role as a referral hub for other area hospitals and districts. The medical team, headed by the in-charge surgeon, is recognized for their excellence in providing professional care to over 1.5 million populations in the Mwanza Diocese. Annual statistics show patients from as far as Uganda’s Kagera Region and eastern parts of Northern Tanzania, further emphasizing the reputation of Geita Hospital as an exemplary healthcare hub.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the triumphs, challenges persist in various forms. Many patients lack vital medical supplies due to inadequate local resources. Poor infrastructure, and inadequate power generators often lead to power outages, disrupting both medical services and hospital operations.
In the fight against these health challenges, humanitarian organizations, public-private partnerships and local initiatives remain crucial in mobilizing resources. The Tanzanian government, UN agencies, national and international NGO’s, with Geita District Council, has been actively invested in supporting public health programs aiming to reduce burden of disease for the population surrounding Geita District.
