The Am Nabak refugee camp, located in Lebanon’s Arsal region, has become a last resort for thousands of Syrians seeking refuge from their country’s devastating civil war. The camp, opened in 2014, has expanded to accommodate more than 12,000 displaced people, making it one of the largest refugee camps in Lebanon.

A refuge for the persecuted

The camp is home to a diverse population, including families, singles, and unaccompanied children. Many residents have fled their homes after being targeted by extremist groups, such as ISIS, or forced to flee due to fierce fighting between government forces and rebel groups. Others have been repeatedly displaced, forced to abandon their possessions and livelihoods and are now struggling to survive in the camp’s harsh conditions.

The daily struggles of life in the camp

Life in Am Nabak camp is a daily struggle for survival. The camp lacks basic amenities, including health facilities, drinking water and sanitation. Residents queue to receive a food distribution and many go to bed hungry. The harsh winter months bring additional challenges, as camp infrastructure is often unable to cope with heavy rains and freezing temperatures.

Risks and challenges

Despite the desperate conditions, the camp presents many risks and challenges for its residents. The remoteness and lack of protection make it vulnerable to external threats, including armed bandits and human traffickers. Additionally, overcrowding and inadequate sanitation systems create an environment conducive to the spread of diseases such as cholera and hepatitis.

A glimmer of hope

Despite the challenges and risks, Am Nabak refugee camp remains a beacon of hope for its residents. The camp provides a sense of community and security, and many of its residents have formed close bonds with their fellow Syrians. The camp’s volunteer staff, made up of local Lebanese and international organizations, work tirelessly to provide aid and support to residents, often despite limited resources.

A call to action

As the Syrian civil war continues to rage, the plight of residents of the Am Nabak refugee camp continues to worsen. We urge governments, international organizations and individuals to increase their support for the camp and its residents. Increased funding and support are needed to provide basic necessities, such as food, health care and sanitation, to the thousands of Syrian refugees living in the Am Nabak camp.
