Tanzania is facing a crisis as an influx of refugees has flooded into the already overcrowded Nyarugusu refugee camp. The influx of new arrivals has brought the camp’s total population to more than 100,000 people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
An unprecedented influx
The camp, located in western Tanzania near the town of Kasulu, has seen an unprecedented influx of refugees fleeing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to conflict, political instability and economic uncertainty. In the last month alone, more than 12,000 new arrivals entered the camp, a significant increase from the 6,000 arrivals recorded in 2020.
Overpopulation worsens living conditions
The massive influx of new arrivals has exacerbated the camp’s chronic overcrowding problem, worsening living conditions for residents. Many are forced to live in tents, some with several families sharing cramped and unsanitary accommodation. Access to basic amenities such as clean water, sanitation and health services is also strained.
The government and NGOs respond to the crisis
The Tanzanian government and humanitarian agencies have rushed to respond to the crisis. The Tanzanian Red Cross and the World Food Program have sent emergency aid, including food, water and medical supplies, to support the influx of new arrivals.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) also stepped in to support UNHCR and the Tanzanian government by providing assistance, including accommodation and infrastructure, to enable the expansion of the camp and better management.
Challenges ahead
Despite efforts to alleviate the crisis, the road ahead remains long and difficult. Nyarugusu camp still lacks sufficient resources, including food, water, shelter and medical care. Camp infrastructure, including sanitation facilities and medical centers, remains insufficient.
As the crisis in the DRC continues to worsen, the flow of refugees into Tanzania is unlikely to diminish in the near future. Tanzania, with limited resources and infrastructure, is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, which will require a sustained international response to effectively address it.
A call to action
As the humanitarian crisis in Nyarugusu camp worsens, the international community must respond quickly and collectively to alleviate the suffering of the refugee population. It is crucial that governments, humanitarian organizations and individual donors prioritize this crisis and support the Tanzanian government’s efforts to manage the influx of refugees and provide essential assistance to those in need.
