The island nation of Mauritius has taken a significant step forward in ensuring a safer healthcare environment for its patients and healthcare providers. The Mauritius government, in collaboration with international organizations and healthcare experts, has introduced modern medical incinerators to facilitate the safe and effective disposal of infectious waste from hospitals and clinics across the island.

A Growing Concern

In recent years, Mauritius has been facing a rapid growth in medical tourism, attracted by the islands’ reputation as a popular wellness destination. The increased demand on healthcare services, combined with poor waste management infrastructure, has been causing concerns for public health, environment, and occupational safety for healthcare workers. The disposal of infectious waste remains a significant risk to both, and the current manual handling process is inadequate for containing the menace.

Introducing Modern Medical Incinerators

The introduction of medical incinerators marks a significant shift from the traditional way of disposing off infectious waste using incinerated toilets or underground storage facilities that have been largely inadequate and a major health threat. The installation of these automated systems ensures reliable, efficient and eco-friendly procedures to destroy, incinerate, and handle the disposal of bio-medical waste, hospital waste, microbiological waste and infectious waste thereby protecting the country from the rapid spread of preventable diseases

Capacity Upgradation

Five modern medical incinerators will be installed with a capacity of 200Kgs per cycle and 36 cycles per shift. This signifies an increase from the current operational capacity of manual disposal. Every hour, we expect to render waste management 40 times higher in comparison.

Numerous Key Features

These modern medical incinerators operate with advanced environmental standards, ensure minimum air, noise and energy pollution, which not only help minimize the external effects but safeguard our citizens more.

Some of key features include low maintenance, durability, low risk, easy removal, high-grade filtration, fire and explosion-preventing, heat-recovery possibility for hot gases recycling, complete emission control device with automatic safety cutoff.
Moreover, they contain multi-faith facilities thus supporting religious groups across the religious beliefs.
Another unique feature with them is noise reducing, allowing less noise nuisance around the locality

The timely implementation of new waste management practice by installing, upgrading and sustaining such equipment provides Mauritius in general, safety to the present-day patients, staff, people working in environment & society

By investing in safe waste management procedures, the health and well-being of the populace of Mauritius can be well-maintained and safeguard for a healthier atmosphere
