Malawi is a country located in southern Africa, known for its natural beauty, rich cultures and warm hospitality. However, behind the veil of its idyllic landscape lies a crucial environmental problem that threatens to engulf the very fabric of its society: the problem of toxic waste accumulation.
Accumulation of hazardous waste
In recent years, Malawi has experienced a significant increase in the influx of hazardous waste, from domestic and international sources. This toxic waste arrives in the form of obsolete electronic devices, chemicals and other combustible materials, which are shipped to the country’s two main landfills: Phalombe and Lilongwe. Unfortunately, instead of being disposed of effectively, these hazardous materials accumulate dust, creating a huge risk to health and the environment.
