Waste Management Woes in Refugee Camps

In refugee camps around the world, waste management is a persistent challenge. UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) camps often struggle to properly dispose of the large volumes of waste generated by thousands of residents, posing serious health and environmental risks. To address this issue, the UNHCR has partnered with innovative organizations to implement cutting-edge solutions. One such solution is a new incinerator that converts trash into clean energy.

Meet the Incinerator

Developed by the UK-based charity, Engineering Development Group (EDG), the incinerator is specifically designed for use in refugee camps and other emergency response situations. This portable, energy-efficient machine is capable of reducing up to 4,000 kg of waste per day, including plastics, food waste, and hazardous materials, into sterile ash.

Benefits of Incineration

The incinerator offers several advantages over traditional waste management methods:

* Reduces Health Risks: By converting trash into clean energy, the incinerator minimizes the risk of disease transmission and eliminates the need for hazardous waste dumping sites.
* Decreases Environmental Impact: Incineration reduces the need for landfills and prevents leachate – a toxic liquid formed when organic waste breaks down – from contaminating soil and groundwater.
* Saves Time and Resources: The incinerator eliminates the need for manual waste collection, sorting, and transportation, freeing up personnel for more critical tasks.

Rolling Out the Incinerators

The first incinerators have been successfully installed in two UNHCR refugee camps: Kakuma, Kenya, and Nyarngalom, Djibouti. In both camps, the machines have reduced waste by over 80% and eliminated the need for makeshift waste dumps. The incinerators are now being deployed in other refugee camps, with plans to install up to 10 machines worldwide within the next two years.
