On March 28, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly established UN Women, the leading global champion for the defense of women and girls. Twenty years later, UN Women has made significant progress in promoting women’s rights and achieving gender equality. As we mark this important milestone, it is essential to reflect on the progress made and look to the future.
A platform for change
The creation of UN Women was a crucial response to the lack of funding and coordination of women’s empowerment programs. Since then, the organization has provided a platform for women to claim their rights, shape their own futures, and contribute to the global effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A decade of achievements
Over the past decade, UN Women has achieved significant milestones. These include:
- Increase funding to support women’s empowerment initiatives, with a 200% increase in resources committed to gender equality programs since 2011.
- Pushing for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, a historic treaty against violence against women, which saw more than 90 countries sign the agreement.
- Launch of the #HeForShe campaign, a global solidarity movement urging men to take an active role in promoting gender equality.
- Creation of the Global Accelerator Lab to support women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Challenges and opportunities
Despite progress, significant challenges remain. Many women and girls still face barriers to education, employment and political participation. Climate change, conflict and inequality continue to exacerbate existing disparities. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and growth.
Facing the future
To commemorate 20 years of UN Women, the organization launched a new strategic framework, focusing on:
- Empowering women and girls through economic equality, education and entrepreneurship.
- Combat climate change and environmental degradation through gender-sensitive policies and initiatives.
- Strengthen the global architecture for gender equality, including by increasing funding and coordination of gender-responsive programs.
A call to action
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of UN Women, it is crucial to recognize that the fight for gender equality is far from over. We must continue to advocate for and invest in women’s empowerment programs. In doing so, we can create a world in which women and girls can thrive and humanity as a whole can thrive.
UN Women’s mission is not only to empower women, but also to empower humanity. As we move forward, let’s come together to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of gender, age or background.
As UN Women celebrates its 20th anniversary, we remember the power of collective action, the importance of intersectional approaches and the impact of gender equality on society as a whole. The road ahead will be long and difficult, but with continued commitment and determination, we can create a more just and equitable world – for everyone.
