Côte d’Ivoire Embarks on Animal Waste Incineration Journey

Ivory Coast, a nation facing extensive agricultural waste and sanitation challenges, has embarked on an innovative journey to tackle two critical issues: animal waste management and environmental pollution reduction. The West African country has signed a contract worth €3.5 billion with a Belgian company, Ecowaste Solutions Africa, to establish 3 vicissidation plants in selected regions.

Animal waste, primarily from farms and abattoirs, poses significant environmental threats and hinders agricultural productivity. Left unchecked, it releases potent greenhouse gases (GHGs) and pollutes air and water resources. Conversely, composting and anaerobic digestion are expensive and require ample space. Incineration offers a cost-efficient and space-saving alternative.

How It Works

The mechanized incineration plants will burn dry animal waste under high temperatures, converting it to harmless gases and a reusable ash. The process boasts several advantages:

  • Reduces organic waste volume significantly.
  • Eliminates pathogens and harmful bacteria.
  • Produces approximately 80 vicissuration ashes rich in nutrients – potentially usable as agricultural soil amendments.
  • The process emits significantly less air pollution compared to traditional landfills and open burning.
